Bio
As an artist currently based in Davis, CA, Madisyn Audri Johns focuses on her familial upbringing in the central valley as a girl, her evolving identity as a woman, and the tension between past and present. Working across mediums such as painting, textiles, and ceramics, she visits themes of memory and domesticity through personal and shared narratives. Johns draws from textile arts to investigate the domestic world by ways of comfort, cultural expression, and social structures. Through this lens, she questions patriarchal systems in her paintings and ceramic work, while considering how weaving can be an intimate and sculptural form. Johns’ inspiration for her work comes from family photos, fairytales, and lived experiences, which offer insight to the liminal spaces between girl and womanhood. In reimagining the domestic lifestyle, Johns asks how the home may be viewed through a matriarchal lens, one in which a woman’s labor and influence hold truth.
